OC_TOBER 20

 OC_TOBER 20

Well here we are, after a year, of neither Inktober, nor March of the Pixels, I’ve brought back my contribution to these monthly art challenges. Sadly because of the various issues surrounding Inktober these days, and the fact I wanted more than just simple prompts this time, I went with the twitter user @Cryscries OC Tober challenge instead, and I’ll be honest with you, I’m glad that I did.

An “OC” for those who may be unaware, stands for original character, and as original as any character can be, they are essentially the creations of the author and/or artist that puts them out there. For me I’ve got a habit of creating women more than men, but with a focus on who they are over what they look like despite taking the “anime” style approach to how they look. As much as I love Japanese media, I’ve always hated the fact that the Japanese will write female characters with a moment of introspective redundancy, when women are just as capable as men.

DAY ONE: YOUR FIRST OC

Me being a young teenager, influenced by all the media consumed from all the years prior to current, meant that this character was based on knuckles the echidna, trunks from dragonball, and Neo from the matrix. The more shocking fact about this characters origin is that he was supposed to be some kind of spy or agent because I was heavily influenced by James Bond and Metal Gear too… I think we can safely say he was a bit too conspicuous.

DAY TWO: YOUR LATEST OC

This is the main character of a single page comic I’m working on called “World Egg”. This image is her waking up from the dream that the strange single page comic covers. She didn’t really have a name until I drew her for this challenge, because the comic has no dialogue or reason to give her a name.

I’m going to be adding a comic section to the website sometime in November, and hopefully the comic in question should be on it soon after that.

DAY THREE: YOUR FAVORITE OC

I feel like at least when you start a story, the protagonist will always be your favourite original character, because otherwise you’d just write the story from a different characters perspective anyway. I do wonder if that opinion will stick when I really get stuck into a few years of the manga. Stories are just as much an adventure for the author as they are the reader after all.

DAY FOUR: OC THAT NEEDS MORE LOVE

Gunner used to be called “Hack” which was because her original design saw her carrying uzi style machine guns, but each with blades on the top… over design really.

This particular version just carries a small pistol that is taped to the inside of her hat.

DAY FIVE: OC MADE FOR A FANDOM

Plenty is now part of the “Imitation Dei” canon. She was originally a fan OC for one piece though… Then I loved her design so much that I decided that since I designed her, it was then important that I keep her and make good use of her.

Her third arm used to be her left before it was cut off, and thanks to her Axolotl biology, she was able to reattach the limb while regrowing her left arm back. Handy… if you’ll forgive the pun!

DAY SIX: DRAW OC LIKE A 90’s STYLE ANIME

The cyborg girl Dark, seemed like a good choice to go brutally 90’s with. I feel like doing the style with digital tech minimises the impact of the style by cleaning it up a bit too much though.

Dark is one of the characters that will likely show their faces near to the beginning of “Imitation Dei” unless plans for the series change.

DAY SEVEN: DRAW YOUR FRIENDS OC

What better friend than your own wife? This is a female “mus” a creature that lives mischievously as a rule. Their lore is fairly loose as they’re just a daft kind of creature to improvise hijinks as. It’s definitely hard to explain to people outside the relationship bubble though!

DAY EIGHT: YOUR OC OUT OF CHARACTER

Abzu Green, not a sister of Eva Green though, without getting too confusing they are technically one and the same whilst have their own seperate bodies. Abzu here dressed as a sailor scout which is arguable as being something that she wouldn’t do, she’s definitely less reserved than Eva.

When thinking of which planet she’d represent, I thought it’d be fun to state it was the “forest moon of endor”.

DAY NINE: ANGEL/DEMON AU

Alternate universes are pretty much all I like to think about for writing in, as stories in alternate universes both near and far to the logic of our own, means more freedom to create a story that fits that world perfectly.

Clover is currently the only concepted character I have for the short comic I’ll be working on after “World Egg”, the idea for the plot being that angels must perform various acts for a hell facing militia if they are to gain their wings and fly freely.

DAY TEN: FAVOURITE OC COUPLE

Even the most mischievous of “mus” have a lot of love in their hearts.

This was a much needed break while I worked on a much more ambitious prompt in advance. At this point in the challenge I was starting to really want to do more interesting backgrounds where possible.

Eva gives chase.png

DAY ELEVEN: WHICH OC WOULD YOU FIGHT IN A PARKING LOT?

I don’t like to draw myself as anything other than a very expressive bean, and I think this outfit really works for Eva. I want to, for reasons that the manga will make clear, Eva tends to wear practical over anything flashy at all times. All I will say is that her fashion sensibilities are not because she believes that dressing any other way is wrong.

DAY TWELVE: WHICH OC NEEDS A HUG

It felt only right to make this next one a kind of “sequel” to the last prompt, as I’m not really all for drawing fight scenes yet, I’m slowly building my skills up as an artist, and fight scenes take a lot of skill to do well, especially in a single image.

humbaba knuckle.png

DAY THIRTEEN: YOUR ANGSTY OC

Humbaba has a fairly good reason to be angsty. She’s one of the first antagonists in “Imitation Dei”. Her name may come from the Epic of Gilgamesh, but in the world of “Imitation Dei” the name has a slightly different meaning.

I’m not a massive fan of this outfit, as it’s a prototype from early concepts, but with these daily challenges it’s very tricky to innovate anything new.

DAY FOURTEEN: ANOTHER FRIEND’S OC

Grant Uchida is a youtuber who I met about a decade ago when I was creating Daily Vlogs. Though not a drawn character, Grant has made the red shirt and bowtie look his in such an iconic way.

Interested in seeing what Grant has to offer? look no further than HERE

DAY FIFTEEN: DRAW A SHORT COMIC WITH YOUR OC

Time Machine and World Egg were both written at about the same time, and it was going to be one or the other that I made during this challenge. In the end I decided that it was a bad idea to compromise on World Egg, and that this was the best suited comic idea to tackle on a tight deadline. Rose as an older wiser woman, has gone back to see her young self.

After regretting mistakes, she had wished to go back in time and correct things, but ultimately settled on teaching her younger self to make the most of her life since it’d clearly be banned to travel back in time and rewrite history if time travel ever did become possible.

Before I work on World Egg, I’ve decided to create studies of existing works first, as I currently don’t feel like I can do that story justice yet.

Anna.png

DAY SIXTEEN: GREASER/ GANG AU

It may be set in an alternate universe to ours, but Anna’s story “Aegis” will be taking place in the same world as “Imitation Dei”.

Anna is a body guard, but does sometimes dabble in other oddjobs. Her side hobby is all about adventuring around on a motorcycle.

Her story will be heavily focused on her getting mixed up in a much bigger job than just simple Body Guard work.

DAY SEVENTEEN: WHAT IS YOUR OC’S HALLOWEEN COSTUME?

Gunner is a character with not only a great poker face, but is also just a great actor in general. Very convincing. I really need to watch the Joker movie, my only current experience of this film are the memes it spawned.

DAY EIGHTEEN: YOUR OC AS AN ANIMAL CROSSING CHARACTER

Eva Green would definitely enjoy the peaceful life that living on your own personal island brings that’s for sure, but then again, from one introvert to a potential other, wouldn’t we all?

DAY NINETEEN: YOUR FAVOURITE MEME

Fairly sure that I don’t actually have a “favourite meme” but this is at least one of the memes I felt would work best. It’s definitely the most relatable for me. With Dark being a character from my biggest project “Imitation Dei” it definitely hits home!

DAY TWENTY: WITCH/ WARLOCK AU

Anybody that remembered my Inktober 2018 pieces, will remember that I drew a girl pushing an oncoming, rolling, snowman head back up a flight of stairs. This is a more up to date drawing of her. I had so much fun painting and texturing the snowballs too!

DAY TWENTY-ONE: ANOTHER FRIEND’S OC

I have a lot of love for all the friend’s I’ve met along the way with making art. Elliot Train is probably most active on his Twitter. although I’m also going to link his Instagram too, so be sure to check his art out. This was a character he made titled “time turtle”.

DAY TWENTY-TWO: DND OC

I will eventually get around to playing an actual session of DND. For now though I have yet to ever play a single game. I don’t think you could actually play as an Oompa Loompa in DND, but I would definitely play as a bard that sings specifically about every failure and unfortunate circumstance. The name I gave him is just a name using the names of people that have played the Oompa Loompas on screen.

DAY TWENTY-THREE: OC IN FRIEND’s STYLE

Xanthe Simmans recently set up a sticker shop and you can find it by clicking this link. This piece is in her style, while also paying homage to a set of images she made last year where she’d put pieces in her style in her photographs.

DAY TWENTY-FOUR: OC IN YOUR CLOTHES

The rules didn’t say that the OC had to fit!

DAY TWENTY-FIVE: AN OC SIMILAR TO YOU

We literally have the same voice after all! I always love drawing the bean. It started as a way to learn gesture in a simple way, and then I ended up making that bean into a character.

DAY TWENTY-SIX: DOES YOUR OC LIKE PUMPKIN SPICE LATTES?

I feel like at least one of my OC’s probably would enjoy them, but I’m not a fan, and I will always jump on the chance to meme.

DAY TWENTY-SEVEN: AN OC IN CLOTHES YOU WISH YOU HAD

I don’t think I could pull the look of quite as well as Eva does. But the outfit Kotaro wears in Kamen Rider Black RX is legendary. Sadly it’s visual appeal got slightly nerfed by the “Saban Masked Rider” series, but it still to me is a great outfit.

DAY TWENTY EIGHT: LAST FRIEND OC

Verzias is an OC that I think can only come from an early teenage starting point much. His back story was pretty cool though if I remember. I am at least certain that he had a hatred for guns because that’s what tore his family apart. The creator of this character, Arron Baxter, can be found on Instagram HERE

DAY TWENTY-NINE: MONSTER AU

The Monarch are a species featured in Imitation Dei’s plot. They are a species that not only eats human kind as a delicacy, they actually have created a farming village where the human residents carry out the tasks that Monarchs with their two fingered hands cannot. When the time is right, Humans are selected to partake in a game that see’s the unlucky eaten, and the survivors set free so as not to arouse the suspicions of the remaining villagers yet to be selected.

DAY THIRTY: FREE SPACE DRAW ANYTHING

It made a lot of sense to me, to make it so that the next piece of art was also a serious attempt at concept art for my manga. I have a bad habit of keeping ideas in my head, when anybody will tell you that you really have to get idea’s out onto paper, or in this case on screen to really see how everything works.

I deliberately chose to have Eva where everything in a kind of uncomfortable way, because to her this is easily the least enjoyable thing in life. She starts the story of Imitation Dei without much of a want for anything in life, and is yet to choose what she’d want to specialise in at school for the last two years of it.

here’s Johnny!!!.png

DAY THIRTY-ONE: YOUR FAVOURITE HORROR MOVIE

I know that this kind of hurts the prompt to admit, but I don’t really watch horror films at all, and when I tried to think of anything that would even remotely work for this prompt, my mind went straight to pop culture, and from that the first think I could think of was “The Shining” which I’ve at least seen a little bit of in the form of clips.

I’m probably more familiar with the reference to it in the Simpsons though.

And that’s pretty much that really. Another monthly challenge done, and this time I really have a lot more fun that I usually do. I got a little bit frustrated at the end, but that was more down to the fact that making art in a small time slot leaves very little room for experimentation with the unfamiliar such as background art. My next project is to work on a manga compilation of short stories, and I probably won’t be taking on any art challenges until that’s done now.
